<p>The supporting system for an offshore drilling platform includes a motor driven rack and pinion system for each retractable leg. The pinions (3) each side of the rack (1) are driven through reduction gear units (4). Incorporated in a lower section of the platform (2) is a safety system with pairs of pinions (8,9) also engaging the two sides of the vertical rack. Adjacent to each spindle for the pinions is a braking device (10,11). Each pair of pinions is attached to a frame (12) by a device (14) such as an eccentric which is rotated to engage or disengage the teeth of the rack. In an alternative design, the whole of the suspension system for all these components can be resiliently supported within the platform structure.</p> |
