Lightweight concrete is characterised by a bulk density of less than 1.0 kg/dm<3> and high heat-insulating capacity. With decreasing bulk density, the thermal conductivity is reduced and the mechanical properties are usually impaired. A lightweight concrete which is non-combustible, has a bulk density of 200 to 450 g/l and has both good thermal insulation properties and satisfactory mechanical properties is obtainable if a water-soluble cellulose ether and an aqueous plastic dispersion with low solids content are used in its production. The foam composition obtained by this process hardens and forms moulded bodies with uniform porosity.
