A smectite is described, the exchangeable cations of which are replaced to at least 50% by organic cations and the surface of which is coated by a peptiser such as for example sodium tripolyphosphate or tannate. This smectite forms gels in nonpolar solutions if small amounts of a polar solvent and small amounts of a salt or an acid are added.
