<p>A multiple flight elevator system (20) for use in a mobile sweeper (22) in combination with a pick-up broom (29) and a debris receiving hopper (28). The elevator features the combination of mechanical elevating means (42, 44, 46) which moves heavy articles or bulky masses of debris upwardly within the hopper (28) while relying on a low volume blower (48) for moving light articles and dust into the hopper (28) providing a cleaner sweep surface and minimizing the exhaust dust problem. Two embodiments are disclosed each including a plurality of independently driven flexible resilient paddle wheels (42, 44, 46) in combination with a low volume blower (48) for progressively raising the debris from the broom (29) through an elevator housing (50) and into the hopper (28). The lower end of the housing (50) of the first embodiment is disposed close to the surface being cleaned and the housing (50) is pivoted to the sweeper chassis (23) in order to move over contacted abutments. The lower end of the housing (50a) of the second embodiment is spaced well above the road surface and the housing is rigidly secured to the chassis (23a). A flexible resilient debris guide (100) extends downwardly from the housing (50a) and is movable connected to the housing (50a) and to the broom support arms (29a) to pivot and deflect relative to the housing (50a). </p> |
