PURPOSE:To recognize a character by having the dictionary of a hierarchical structure, extracting a differential pattern between similar patterns through a dictionary which identifies in detail the similar character of a lower level and checking the similarity to said differential pattern. CONSTITUTION:A sampling pattern is obtained by a normal similarity calculating method through a sampling circuit 5. A numeric character ''1'' is estimated as a sampling pattern to set an alphanumeric read mode. Then a similarity calculating circuit 9 performs a similarity calculation for a sampling pattern 23 based on the contents of the 1st stage dictionary memory 6 (blocks 24-29) and then sends the results of the calculation to a deciding circuit 10 to decide the category of the block 27. The circuit 10 decides that the block 27 is not the final result. The circuit 10 discriminated ''1'' or '' I '' based on the block 27 which is decided and gives an indication to a differential pattern extracting circuit 11 through a signal line 13 to extract the difference of similar patterns. The circuit 11 extracts a corresponding pattern out of a reference pattern memory 12 and obtains a difference between said pattern and an original pattern separated by a character separating circuit 3.
