PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of creep while a car is brought to a step and to prevent the occurrence of a starting shock, by a method wherein, in a automatic transmission gear, a friction element, operated from the beginning in which a running range is entered, is held at a state which is right before engagement. CONSTITUTION:In an automatic transmission gear, the transmission gear is provided with a stator torque control valve 46 which controls the working oil pressures of a friction element and a forward clutch so that the working oil pressures are regulated to an upper limit value required for prevention of the occurrence of creep in response to a stator torque generated at the stator of a torque converter, and a car stop detecting valve 51 which actuates the stator torque control valve 46 while a car is brought to a stop. This, when a friction element is engaged in preparation for the starting, enables said engagement to be effected without the occurrence of a time lag due to loss stroke of the friction element, resulting in the possibility to prevent the occurrence of a starting shock.
