PURPOSE:To obtain advantageously the titled compound useful as a sizing agent for paper making, by using an olefin containing >=60wt% specific olefin having 12-22 carbon atoms as a raw material, and isomerizing the olefin in the presence of a solid acid-base catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An olefin having 12-22 carbon atoms, shown by the formula (Rx is H, or 1-4C alkyl; Ry is straight-chain alkyl), comprising <=20mol% hydrogen component of Rx and >=60mol% component having 9-19 total carbon atoms of Rx and Ry, is used as a raw material, 0.5-1.5mol maleic anhydride is added to 1mol olefin of the raw material in the presence of a solid acid-base catalyst, and addition reaction is carried out under heating, preferably at 160-250 deg.C, to give the aimed compound. Silica titania, silica alumina, etc., having various composition ratios are used as the solid acid-base catalyst. An amount of it used is preferably 0.01-10wt% based on the raw material.
