PURPOSE:To obtain a small-sized magnetic type device by executing the magnetization for an origin signal to the rotating shaft, forming the origin scale and arranging the origin reader to a fixing member in order to read the origin scale. CONSTITUTION:By the rotation of a rotating shaft 2, a sine wave-shaped repeating signal is obtained at the frequency in accordance with the rotating speed from a magnetic detecting element 3. The waveform shaping is executed for the signal, the pulse, which occurs at the zero cross point, is obtained, the number of the pulse is counted by the counter, and then, the rotating quantity of the rotating shaft 2 is obtained by the counted value. On the other hand, at every time the rotating shaft 2 is rotated once, the signal by an origin scale is obtained from a magnetic detecting element 30. Thus, even in case of the magnetic type rotary encoder which can obtain the main signal and the origin signal, the main scale is provided enough at a magnetic disk 1 and the diameter of the disk 1 can be made smaller.
