PURPOSE:To make it possible to clamp a workpiece without deforming the latter, by providing a reference guide which may change its position in the direction substantially orthogonal to the workpiece transfer direction and a cylinder for pressing the workpiece against the reference guide. CONSTITUTION:A reference guide 2 is arranged on one side of a transfer path for a workpiece (a) which is transferred by a conveyor 1, so that the guide 2 may change its position in the direction substantially orthogonal to the transfer direction of the workpiece (a), and a cylinder 3 for pressing the workpiece (a) against the reference guide 2 is arranged along the transfer path on the side in opposite to the reference guide. Thus, when the workpiece (a) reaches substantially the position of the reference guide 2, the conveyor 1 is stopped, and is then a motor 5 is driven to shift the reference guide 2 which is therefore substantially abuts against the one side of the workpiece (a). Then the rotation of the motor 5 is stopped by a proximity switch 15 in such an abutting condition. Thereafter, the cylinder 3 is extended to clamp the workpiece (a) without the workpiece being shifted by a large distance.
