PURPOSE:The titled polyester, having specific repeating units and average polymerization degree, improved flame resistance, high glass transition point, good hue, moldability, physical properties, etc., and suitable for molded articles, e.g. fibers, films, etc. CONSTITUTION:A flame-resistant polyester, obtained by polycondensing (A) a phosphinic acid derivative prepared by reacting (i) 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10- phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide with (ii) a quinone corresponding to an aromatic dihydroxy compound, e.g. o-dihydroxybenzene, in a solvent, e.g. ethyl cellosolve, while heating and reacting the resultant reaction product with ethylene oxide in, e.g. xylene, under pressure with (B) benzenedicarboxylic acid, e.g. terephthalic acid and having repeating units expressed by formula I (E is CH2CH2; X is aromatic group; Y is phenylene; Z is formula II; m and n are integers 1-20) and 10-300 average polymerization degree.
