PURPOSE:To make it easy for a user to vary the resolution by incorporating a switching means which sets variably the dot diameter of a laser beam and a resolution signal frequency and/or the scanning speed of the laser beam and varying the resolution of dot images by setting of the switching means. CONSTITUTION:A laser printer controls variably the dot diameter, the scanning speed, and the picture signal frequency by an incorporated switching means 230. If the scanning speed and the picture signal frequency are controlled in parallel with the control of the dot diameter, dot densities in main scanning and subscanning directions are varied, and the dot diameter is varied in accordance with them. On demand, only the dot density in the main scanning or subscanning direction can be adjusted independently to change the resolution. Dot densities in main scanning and subscanning directions are varied to change longitudinal and transverse magnifications of pictures. Thus, the user switches the switching means to vary the resolution easily.
