PURPOSE:To enable a proper winding-setting of a stencil base paper, by a method wherein the difference between a peripheral velocity of a cylindrical plate cylinder and a travel speed of the stencil base paper having a punched image formed by heating elements in a sub-scanned direction is absorbed by a slip clutch. CONSTITUTION:A character information signal from a word processor is reversed by a mirror and allows respective heating elements of a thermal head 71 to be selectively heated to punch a thermoplastic film of a thermosensible stencil base paper S in dot form. Simultaneously, a motor 94 is started, thus the base paper S is fed to a cylindrical plate cylinder 20, i.e. in a sub-scanned direction, until reaching a clamp means 21, and then being clamped by a clamp piece 24 at the leading edge thereof. After that, the plate cylinder 20 is rotated by a motor 33 at a peripheral velocity slightly higher than a travel speed of the base paper S, resulting in the base paper S wound around the plate cylinder 20 with a predetermined tension. At this time, the difference between the peripheral velocity of the plate cylinder 20 and the travel speed of the base paper S in the sub-scanned direction is absorbed due to the slip action by a slip clutch 34c. Therefore, the stencil base paper can be properly windingly set round the periphery of the plate.
