PURPOSE:To obtain a high-carbon steel wire rod for extra fine wire having high strength, high toughness, high ductility, and corrosion resistance and suitable for use in manufacture, e.g., of extra fine wires for steel cords, etc., by providing a composition containing each prescribed quantity of C, Si, Mn, P, S, Al and V and having the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. CONSTITUTION:The titled high-carbon steel wire rod has a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.60-0.90% C, 0.05-5.0% Si, 0.30-0.90% Mn, <=0.04% P, <=0.04% S, <=0.002% Al, 0.10-0.50% V, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. As to this steel wire rod, and extra fine wire of <=0.5mm wire diameter and >=230kgf/mm<2> tensile strength can be obtained by applying wire drawing working of >=99% total reduction in area to a steel stock having above- mentioned composition while applying necessary intermediate heat treatment.
