PURPOSE:To obtain the polypeptide having a low liquid crystallization temperature and a widely controllable cholesteric pitch, comprising a specified gamma-benzyl glutamate/rho-alkyl glutamate copolymer. CONSTITUTION:Poly(gamma-benzyl L-glutamate) obtained by ring opening polymerization of gamma-benzyl N-carboxy-L-glutamate anhydride is transesterified with a corresponding alcohol (e.g., n-dodecyl alcohol) at room temperature to 150 deg.C in the presence of an acid or base catalyst (e.g., p-toluenesulfonic acid) in a solvent (e.g., dichloromethane) to obtain a thermotropic cholesteric liquid crystal polypeptide comprising a rho-benzyl glutamate/gamma-alkyl glutamate copolymer of the formula (wherein R is a 10-30C alcyl and m and n are such integers movided that 50<=m+n<=2,000 and m/n is 80-10/20-90 and both the benzyl ester unit and the alkyl ester unit are L iosmers or D isomers).
