PURPOSE:To prevent missing of printing data from occurring at the time of restarting printing and enable accurate data to be continuously printed, by using a printing ribbon provided with a predetermined length of a printing ribbon part next to a tape for detection of a ribbon end. CONSTITUTION:A tape 10 for detection of a ribbon end is added to the trailing end of a printing ribbon 7, and an auxiliary ribbon 11 capable of being used for printing and having a required minimum length larger than the length of the tape 10 is added to the tape 10. An end of the ribbon 7 is wound around a take-up side spool 12, whereas the auxiliary ribbon 11 is wound around a payout-side spool 13. A ribbon end sensor is provided for monitoring the payout of the tape 10. Printing is once stopped in response to an output from the sensor, then the ribbon is fed by the length of the tape 10, and printing is restarted. Thus, a required minimum extent of printing is performed by the auxiliary ribbon 11 in continuity with the interrupted printing, and the printing is then interrupted at a position convenient for interruption, thereby preparing for replacement of a ribbon cartridge 8. Accordingly, when replacing the printing ribbon, the printing can be stopped at a position convenient for restarting printing, and after the replacement, in continuity with the interrupted printing.
