PURPOSE:To minimize recording time, by recording by using only a black ink, only three primary color inks or all of the inks of an ink sheet coated with the three primary color inks and the black ink on a sheet-by-sheet basis. CONSTITUTION:Where an ink sheet selection signal ISSEL is set to be '00', a CPU 1 controls a feeding means 9 so that an ink of a color in which to record first is positioned at a recording-starting position, according to the result of detection by an ink sheet color detecting circuit 7, and moves a color- selecting means 10. The CPU 1 so functions that printing data sequentially transferred through a data bus (a) in the order of yellow, magenta, cyan and black are sequentially transferred, as they are, to a writing circuit 4. Where the ink sheet selection signal ISSEL is '01', the CPU 1 (which normally preforms recording sequentially in the four colors) does not performs recording in a black ink, and finishes a recording operation on recording in a cyan ink. Where the ink sheet selection signal ISSEL is '11', the CPU 1 performs only recording in the black ink.
