PURPOSE:To improve separation efficiency in a short time in simple operation without requiring complicated pretreatment such as solvent extraction, by bringing urine into contact with a weak basic anion exchanger in the presence of a buffer solution and holding the urine thereon in separating vanillylmandelic acid in the urine. CONSTITUTION:Urine containing vanillylamandelic acid or homovanillic acid is brought into contact with a weak basic anion exchanger in the presence of a buffer solution at 4-7 pH to hold the vanillylmandelic acid or homovanillic acid on the weak basic anion exchanger and separate the vanillylamandelic acid or homovanilic acid in the urine. A weak basic anion exchanger, commercially available as an ion chromatographic column packing and having, e.g. -NR2, -NHR or -NH2, as functional groups may be used as the weak basic anion exchanger.
