NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is H, 1-10C alkyl aryl or aralkyl). EXAMPLE:m-Ethynylstyrene. USE:A monomer capable of producing linear polymers, having ethynyl groups useful as functional polymers, etc., for recovering silver, etc., in high yield. PREPARATION:Any one of compounds expressed by formulas II-IV (X-Z are halogen) as a raw material is reacted in the presence of a base as a catalyst, preferably in an inert solvent under normal dehydrohalogenating condition to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I. When the above- mentioned compound is homopolymerized or copolymerized by a radical polymerization method, the ratio of ethynyl groups participating in the polymerization as compared with that of o-isomer or p-isomer is remarkably reduced. Thereby linear polymers can be synthesized in a relatively high yield.
