PURPOSE:To perform a word recognition processing with high precision at high speed by using a word selection table where words are classified at every position of character string. CONSTITUTION:Words are preliminarily classified by character code at every position of character string to constitute a word selection table 1. A word code corresponding to the character code of an input character string is selected and read out from the word selection table 1 by a selection processing means 2 with respect to each position of the input character string, and a decision value set for each character of the input character string and the read-out word code are outputted to a decision value accumulation processing means 3. Decision values are accumulated at every word by the decision value accumulation processing means 3 based on word codes outputted from the selection processing means 2 to obtain an evaluation value. Candidate words are extracted by a sort processing means 4 in accordance with evaluation values of respective words outputted from the decision value accumulation processing means 3.
