PURPOSE:To increase the rate of reaction in the alkylation of a CO group- containing compound with a trialkylaluminum compound, by using the trialkylaluminum compound mixed with an aluminum halide compound. CONSTITUTION:A compound containing CO group (a compound containing aldehyde group, ketone group or ester group) is alkylated with a mixture of a trialkylaluminum compound (e.g. triethylaluminum) and an aluminum halide compound. The aluminum halide compound is preferably dialkylaluminum halide, alkylaluminum sesquihalide, alkylaluminum dihalide, etc., because of their solubility in various solvents and the halide is preferably chloride. The atomic ratio of the total halogen/total aluminum in the mixture is made to be <=1 (preferably <=0.5).
