PURPOSE:To make it possible to prevent the friction force between a pick-up roller and sheets from exerting a load to a platen by providing a detecting means for detecting the trailing end of a sheet just after it passes the pick-up roller. CONSTITUTION:When a clutch 7 is turned on to rotate a platen 1 during printing, the first one of sheets 100 stored in a sheet storage section 4 is delivered out by means of a pick-up roller 5, and thereafter, when the leading end of the sheet comes to the platen 1, the rear end of the sheet is still on the pick-up roller 5. Just after that, a detecting means 21 detects the trailing end of the sheet so that the clutch 7 is turned off. Then the sheet 100 is transferred to a printing initiating position by the rotation of platen 1. At this time the sheet 100 is away from the pick-up roller 5, and therefore, there is no load exerted upon the platen 1.
