PURPOSE:To produce a polykisazobenzene having high molecular weight with simple reaction operation on an industrial scale at a low cost, by irradiating substituted or unsubstituted 1,4-diazidobenzenes with light. CONSTITUTION:The objective polykisazobenzene of formula I (n>=1; X, Y and Z are alkyl, alkoxy, etc.) which is a compound important as a pigment can be produced by irradiating 1,4-diazidobenzene or its substituted compound synthesized from 1,4-diaminobenzene or 1,4-dinitrobenzene, etc., with light to effect photochemical reaction. The irradiation with light is carried out by (i) dissolving the raw material in a solvent (e.g. benzene or ethyl alcohol) and irradiating the solution with light (preferably light of excimer laser) at normal temperature or a low temperature not too low to cause solidification of the solution or (ii) irradiating the raw material in the form of thin film or fine powder or (iii) evaporating the raw material in a reduced pressure atmosphere evacuated with a vacuum line and irradiating the material in vapor form.
