PURPOSE:To aim at making a starter miniaturized and lightweight and at preventing a shift motor from being reversed, by fitting a contact shift to which the base end part of a shift lever is coupled, onto an output shaft extending from the shift motor by way of a speed reduction section, with the use of helical splines. CONSTITUTION:The inner clutch part of a one-way rotation clutch 3 is spline- fitted on the intermediate section of an output rotary shaft 2, movably in the center-axial direction of the shaft. Further, the outer clutch part of the one-way rotation clutch 3 is integrally incorporated with a pinion gear 6. A contact shift 9 to which the base end part of a shift lever 13 is coupled is helical-spline- fitted onto an output shaft 7a extending from a shift motor 7 by way of a speed reduction section. Thus, it is possible to miniaturize a starter and to prevent the motor from being reversed.
