Method for producing gearwheels includes: (a) introduction of carbon into the surface of a preliminarily machined gearwheel consisting of a low carbon steel; (b) slow cooling in such a way that the gear teeth are not hardened; and (c) induction heating of the surface of the gear teeth to increase the residual compressive stresses in the gear teeth, in particular, in their root zones.
