PURPOSE:To perform strong drafts in a hot rolling mill and manufacture thin steel strips by using a high lubricant bringing the friction coefficient between work rolls of the rolling mill and a rolled stock to be smaller than a specific value and loading a compressive force on the stock only when the stock is bitten. CONSTITUTION:A rolled stock 2 is lightly drafted by a pinch roll 1 and then is rolled with strong drafts in a rolling mill 7. A high lubricant bringing the friction coefficient between work rolls 4a, 4b and the stock 2 is to be <=0.2 is supplied to the work rolls 4a, 4b by a lubricant applicator 6. A compressive force is loaded when the stock 2 is bitten by the rolls 4a, 4b as a corrective action against reduction of biting capability in lubicated rolling. In this method, a draft per pass for hot rolling is increased by a simple device modification, so that a wide and thin steel strip is manufactured at a low cost.
