PURPOSE:To obtain a central nervous system depressant being simply manufactured into pharmaceutical preparation and administered, having rapid manifestation of medicinal effects free from toxicity and side effects to human body, comprising a substance such as chitin oligomer, chitosan oligomer or a deactylated substance of chitin oligomer part as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A central nervous system depressant containing at least one selected from chitin oligomer, chitosan oligomer and a deactylated substance of chitin oligomer part which exist in shell of crab, a constituent component of cell wall of organism and has depressing action on central nervous system, especially analgesic action as an active ingredient. The depressant has depressing action on central nervous system and an aqueous solution taking advantage of water solubility of chitin oligomer is suitable for intravenous administration as an injection by conventional procedure. The depressant has merits of simpler purification than a central nervous system depressant containing a high polymer polysaccharide as an active ingredient since the active ingredient has lower molecular weight.
