By measuring selected parameters of portions of input signal, feeding signal to unit under test and monitoring output to be compared with input, this method automatically evaluate the audio characteristics of selected parts in the audio and video program. A segmented signal train is recorded, in real time, on lead-in and lead-out areas of a pre-mastering tape. The recorded test signals are played back, in real time, and a representation is stored in a memory of each test signal. The selected test signal is recirculated repeatedly through the memory. A continuous representation is produced of the selected test signal. A signal analysis is performed of the continuous representation of the selected test signal.
