PURPOSE:To reduce the entire length and improve the installability by constructing a stopper for a pinion from a bearing surface of a bolt threadedly engaged with an output rotary shaft, and restricting the movement of the pinion by the bearing surface and an inner shoulder of the pinion. CONSTITUTION:In a starter motor, a plunger is moved by supplying current to a magnet switch, and an overrunning clutch 14 is moved forwardly (rightwardly) through a lever by the movement of the plunger. Accordingly, a pinion 17 installed in the clutch 14 is brought into mesh with a ring gear on an engine side to thereby effect cranking of the engine. An output rotary shaft 15 is formed at its front end with an internal thread 15a to be threadedly engaged with a bolt 21. The pinion 17 is formed with an inner shoulder 17a to be engaged with a bearing surface 21a of the bolt 21 in rightward moving of the pinion 17. Thus, the rightward movement of the pinion 17 is restricted. With this arrangement, an entire length of the starter motor may be reduced, and the installability may be improved.
