PURPOSE:To provide a good black and white display by specifying the parameters of respective constituting elements including the directions of the optical axes of double refractive plates and the value of DELTAnd of a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal cell 1 constituted by inserting the liquid crystal between a pair of substrates having electrodes, a pair of polarizing plates 2 and 3 disposed on both surfaces of the liquid crystal cell 1 and the two double refractive plates 4, 5 disposed between the liquid crystal 1 and the one polarizing plate 3 and makes on-off display by impressing a 1st or 2nd voltage between the electrodes. The 1st and 2nd voltages of the above-mentioned display device are so selected that the value of 1-¦DELTA¦<2> in the state of optimizing the double refractive plates 4, 5 at the time of the off display attains >=1/2 the max. value thereof when light is made incident from the other polarizing plate 2 where the inner product of between the complex vector of the electric field indicating the elliptical polarization at the time of the on display and the complex vector of the electric field indicating the elliptical polarization at the time of the off display is designated as DELTA. |
