A system and method for operating an automotive internal combustion engine during start-up includes steps of sampling at least one operating parameter of the engine, comparing the sampled parameter to a predetermined range for such parameter, and in the event that the sampled parameter falls outside of the predetermined range, operating some of the engine's cylinders according to a base fuel schedule, while reducing the time-averaged amount of fuel provided to the remaining cylinders.
