The positioning system is for use between mating components, the first of which (102) has a protruding spherical member (106) symmetrical on an axis (104), engaging in a tapering recess in the other component (100) at the contact zone. In a first stage, the centring faces are brought into contact, leaving a gap (114) between the faces (116,118) on the components. In a second stage the components are clamped together, shutting the gap and distorting the material elastically. This distortion takes place in the axial direction by bending.
