A video cassette recorder (100) is provided with means (400) for communicating control data to a cable box (300). A remote controller (150) allows a user to control the video cassette recorder (100) and the cable box (300) via the video cassette recorder (100). An advantage of this arrangement is that unattended recording of a plurality of cable broadcast programmes may be carried out without user intervention between each programme because the cable broadcast channel, to which the cable box (300) is tuned, can be changed by the video cassette recorder (100) in response to programmed recording data stored therein.
