A compensator is for a packaging machine, which processes the material supplied continuously from a supply station non-continuously. It has a number of fixed guide rolls (7) and a corresponding number of guide rolls (6) which can be dislocated in relation to the fixed rolls (6). In conjunction with each other, the two sets of rolls impart a meander-like course to the material (18). The distance between the group of fixed rolls (7) and the movable rolls (6) can be varied. An adjusting drive (8) controlled in accordance with a pre-set speed profile is provided for the dislocatable rolls (6). The speed of the material (18) fed to the compensator is regulated. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compensator is for packaging machines in which bottles or tins arranged in groups are surrounded by a packaging film, which is shrunk in a subsequent step. The tension conditions in the material are kept virtually constant.
