A so-called mobile radio system or trunking system which normally already exists on an airfield is used both for transmitting location data from the vehicle (5) to the central monitoring station (10) and for vehicle identification which is carried out automatically during each call set-up between the central monitoring station and the vehicle, the vehicles being located with the aid of passive location landmarks (guides, beacons) which have been set up at a multiplicity of different points of the airfield in the form of radio-frequency reflectors (1), preferably so-called acoustic surface-wave-ID-tags (SAW-ID-tags) which are interrogated by the passing vehicles with the aid of an interrogation device (11) and whose response signals (4) correspond to the coordinates of the location of the landmark.
