<p>An implantable bone distraction device (10) and method of using the device are disclosed. The device includes spaced first (16) and second (18) low profile blocks for subcutaneous implantation and attachment to osteotomically separated bond sections (12) and (14). The first block (16) defines a drive chamber bore (26) while the second block (18) defines a threaded bore (40). A rotatable drive rod (20) having a first end is received in the drive chamber bore of the first block (16). The rotatable drive rod's other end is threadably received in the threaded bore (40) of the second block (18). The device further includes drive rod actuator located in the drive chamber bore (26) for cooperating with the first end of the drive rod (20) to rotate the drive rod (20) so that one can adjust the depth to which the rod's threaded end (42) is received in the threaded bore (40) of the second block (18). This enables one to adjust the spacing between the first (16) and second (18) blocks, thereby enabling one to controllably distract the separated bone sections (12 and 14) to enhance bone growth therebetween.</p> |
