ATM SWITCHING DEVICE

PURPOSE: To facilitate ATM cell transmission by including at least one server statistical multiplexing unit between input and output ports having buffers and flow control and input and output ports which don't have them. CONSTITUTION: An ATM switchboard is used for communication between plural trunk links 1 and plural customer links 2. At least one trunk link 1 has a statistical multiplexing unit SMU 4 which performs buffering and flow control. At least one customer link 2 has a statistical multiplexing unit SMU 15 which performs buffering and flow control. This switchboard is related to at least one server SMU with respect to operation and facilitates transmission of ATM cells between a trunk link 1 which has a buffer and flow control and a customer link 2 which doesn't have a buffer and flow control. Consequently, that is advantageous with respect to the cost when a burst data traffic volume is small.
