The ionising sensor output signals are sampled under a measurement window activated after combustion has been initiated. A primarily applied parameterised function is curve-adjusted to the sampled output signals from the ionising sensors. The primarily applied function acquires parameter values which generate at least two local maxima (PF,PP). The maxima are within the pref. interval of 17 crankshaft degrees. The primarily applied function is optimised with regard to the relative positions and amplitudes for the generated local max. points and with regard to the min. deviation of the primarily applied function from the sampled output signals from the ionising sensor. The position for the latter local max. points (PP) calculated in crankshaft degrees and relative to top dead centre is used for determining the position for max. pressure during combustion.
