The system is arranged to allow the user to communicate with a computerised monitoring and alarm centre, via the a local or public telephone system. In addition to the normal selection keys (4) and handset (2), the subscriber unit (1) has four special keys (5, 6, 7, 8) under the normal keypad. The user presses combinations of the special keys to indicate different states. Pressing the line (5) and report (6) keys, simultaneously at pre-arranged times, such as twice a day, will indicate that the user is "safe" and that no visit or investigation is needed. Pressing the alarm (8) and line (5) keys will cause an immediate alert at the monitoring centre. Other key combinations can be used for other non-vocal communications.
