<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily use a dictionary function even when using a document display function. <P>SOLUTION: A stroke entered in an input means 2 is detected by a discriminating part 6, and the position information and data from a document memory 5 are supplied to a character string discriminating part 7 so that the word of the instructed character string and its position can be discriminated. The discriminated word is supplied to a dictionary managing part 8. Furthermore, the information of the discriminated position is supplied to an operation menu display part 9, and a signal from an image memory 10 is supplied to a display driving part 3, and a menu image indicating operation items is displayed at a display means 1 corresponding to the instructed character string. Then, when the displayed 'dictionary' item is depressed, a dictionary 11 is retrieved according to the word supplied to the dictionary managing part 8, and the data are supplied through a dictionary item display part 12 to a display driving circuit 3.
