The supports should be hollow and may be cylindrical triangular or conical with a wall thickness of an order of magnitude smaller than the thickness fo the plates being joined. Their distance apart depends on the weight of the top sheet plus explosive. For a 5 mm stainless steel sheet which, with explosive, weighed 90 kg, they were made of 0.15 mm thick material, 8 mm high, placed at 1 m intervals. By making the supports of the same material as one of the sheets, they are assimilated into the combined plate without affecting the surface finish. They can, often be placed round the edges so that they are removed by further operations such as drilling for bolt holes.
|
