Lithium polymerisation catalysts - contg. two reactive carbon-lithium bonds, with increased stability and solubility in aromatics

The catalysts are of formula (I): (in which Ar is an aromatic gp.) The N atoms are pref. in p-posn. on >=1 aromatic rings, which may be separated by a divalent gp., Ar pref. being a p-phenylene, biphenylene, diphenylmethane or diphenyl ether gp. They are esp. suitable for anionic polymerisation to form tri-sequence copolymers of A-B-A type e.g. in which A is a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate and B is a conjugated diene elastomer, and for making high mol. wt. polymers.
