1465063 Bonding rubber and filamentary material DUNLOP Ltd 16 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 24797/73 Heading B5N Aromatic polyamide filamentary material, particularly reinforcing cords for tyres, belts and hoses, is bonded to a rubber composition by (1) applying an aqueous solution or dispersion of an epoxy resin to the filamentary material and drying the coated material; (2) applying an aqueous dispersion of an elastomer and the constituents necessary to form a phenol-formaldehyde resin to the cooled filamentary material and drying this coating; and (3) assembling the coated material with a composition containing rubber together with resin precursors and vulcanizing this composition in control with the coated material, usually under heat and pressure. The rubber composition may comprise natural rubber, styrene-butadiene copolymer, polybutadiene or cis-1,4-polyisoprene and the resin precursors may be an aromatic hydroxy compound and a methylene donor compound which react on heating to form a thermosetting aldehyde condensation resin. The filamentary material may be fibres of polyp-benzamide, poly(1,4-phenylene terephthalamide) or poly- (1,3-phenylene isophthalamide) and may be coated by dipping. The elastomer applied in step (2) may be a butadiene-styrene copolymer or a butadiene-styrene-vinyl pyridine terpolymer and the phenol-formaldehyde constituents may comprise an incompletely condensed resin or formaldehyde together with resorcinol, inaminophenol or 1,3- or 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene. |
