Novel bistriazinylaminostilbene derivatives of the general formula: SO3MSO3M ¦¦ N ANGLE -NH-CC-NH-CH ¦ PARALLEL ¦ PARALLEL ¦NN SO3M ANGLE C ¦ O ¦ SO3MSO3M ¦¦ N ANGLE =CH-NH-CC-NH- ¦ PARALLEL ¦ PARALLEL NN¦ ANGLE SO3M C ¦ O ¦ wherein X and Y, which may be the same or different atoms or groups, are chlorine atoms, hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups such as methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, ter.-butyl and n-octyl groups or methoxy groups and M is a cation which is hydrogen, alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonium cation or an ammonium cation derived from a primary, secondary or tertiary amine. The derivatives are useful as fluorescent brighteners for paper or polyamide fibers and in effecting simultaneous resin finishing and fluorescent brightening of cellulosic fibers.
