1501202 Coatings H H ROBERTSON CO 1 April 1975 [12 April 1974 29 Jan 1975] 13264/75 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates are coated with a polymerisable composition comprising the alkaline reaction product of a) one part by weight of unsaturated polyester resin syrup, i.e. a mixture of unsaturated polyester and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and b) 0.3-10 parts by weight of an aqueous sodium silicate having 45-85 parts by weight of water and 55-15 parts by weight of sodium silicate solids having a weight ratio of SiO 2 /Na 2 O of 1.5 to 3.75, said composition including a polymerisation initiator for the unsaturated polyester resin syrup which is subsequently cured. The composition may also contain fillers such as alumina, perlite, expanded vermiculite, ground glass, glass microspheres, silica, magnesium oxide, mullite, fly ash, zirconia, clay, attapulgite, titanium dioxide, antimony oxide, pigments, and fibrous reinforcing material such as glass fibres, asbestos fibres and mineral wool. Components a) and b) may both be provided as sprays which are impinged to produce an alkaline mixture prior to coating the substrate Suitable substrates are steel sheets which may be galvanised, glass fibre reinforced polyester resin panels, a dry wall, wood, an acrylic resin sheet, paper, concrete, expanded metal lath, cotton cloth, polyester fibre cloth, leather, rubber, polyurethane and glass. A preferred polyester resin syrup used comprises a mixture of styrene and an unsaturated polyester formed from phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride and propylene glycol, and contains alumina or glass fibres as a filler. In Example 9 as expanded metal lath having a cured coating obtained from the polymerisable composition on both sides is obtained by coating the compositions onto a sheet of regenerated cellulose, a sheet of expanded metal lath is deposited thereon, a further coating is applied thereto, and this top coating is covered with another sheet of regenerated cellulose and the formed panel allowed to cure. |
