Axle assembly for maintenance vehicle - has hydrostatic drive with wheels which can be inclined inwards and locked

The assembly has a carrying wheel (10) at each end of an axle (2). Each wheel is mounted on a hub (11), swivelling on the end of the axle and which can move between two positions. In one embodiment the wheels are perpendicular to the axle and another they are inclined from the perpendicular. The wheels can be turned hydrostatically by a motor housed in the hub and the hubs can be locked in either position. Hydraulic rams (14, 16) are placed at each end of the axle, these being hinged and the actuating rod (16) acting on a projection (17) on the hub. A slotted lever (18) goes from each hub to a bracket (20) on the axle to limit inclination of the wheels.
