A press tool to compact a metal powder to a shape with a helical contour includes a die with the desired internal contours, filled with the powder, and an upper and a lower plunger with the desired external contours. Both plungers are supported in bearings with helical grooves containing recirculating balls and of the same pitch as the helical contours of the die. This allows the two plungers to revolve freely as they are closed upon the die and prevents excessive premature water. This is less complicated than a separate mechanical drive for the plungers.
