H2S And mercaptans are removed from gas and liq. streams by contacting the stream with molecular oxygen in a catalytic aq. soln. contg. a polyvalent metal chelate and a strongly alkaline organic amine. Process gives virtually complete removal of H2S and mercaptans and is esp. useful for treating ind. waste gases e.g., from wood pulping or oil refining.
