An impact effect for pressing cable eyes, connectors etc. on to electrical conductors is produced by explosion of a cartridge. A pressure rod has a piston which can be pushed into an explosion chamber in a housing. The rod end interacts with an inverted workpiece support in the pressure head. A cover cap has a withdrawal device with protection for the pressure rod. The pressure rod (9) can be set against an adjustable stop (34, 38) by a tensioning device (28) movable along the case (5). The tensioning device may be formed as a tensioning sleeve which surrounds a guide (5) joining the pressure head (4) and the cartridge holder (7).
