A method of producing benzimidazolone which comprises reacting a feed compound having the general formula <IMAGE> wherein X and Y independently represent an amino group or a nitro group, with carbon monoxide in solvent in the presence of selenium and a base, and in the presence of water when the feed compound has nitro groups.
