Using a process and an auxiliary means for this purpose for fixing floor coverings, wall coverings or the like to a countersurface, especially of at least partly flexible webs to be aligned at the place of installation such as fitted carpets on the surface of a floor, by means of an adhesive layer, on one hand the laying process is intended to be considerably simplified and on the other the detachment of a laid carpet from the substrate is intended to be permitted without the substrate and/or its fitted carpet becoming soiled or damaged. To this end, chemically passivated adhesive particles in a non-adhesive state are applied between the surfaces to be fixed together, the activation of the adhesive particles after laying is carried out by the effect of temperature and a firm adhesive bond is produced by reducing this temperature. In this process, in the thermoplastic state the cohesive forces of the adhesive particles are greater than their adhesive forces, while the reverse relationship applies in the cold state. A flat fibre structure (2), especially a net, made of inorganic or organic fibres, which is provided with a thermoplastic containing chemically passivated adhesive particle serves as an auxiliary. This rot-resistant fibre structure (2) is impregnated with plastic, the adhesive particles of which have higher cohesive forces than adhesive forces in the thermoplastic state. <IMAGE>
